Vladimir Dimitrov – Maistora

Vladimir Dimitrov, also known as Maistora, is one of the most famous and original Bulgarian painters. His style is unique and could hardly be mistaken. He left an indelible mark in Bulgarian painting, establishing himself as an artist who rejects academism. In most of his works, Maistora shows the everyday life of ordinary people. He created dozens of compositions depicting typical figures of village men and women and girls at work or engaged in folk rites and festivities. His works were inspired by the beautiful natural scenery of the native land and the decorative style of folk arts. In 1972, to commemorate the 90th anniversary since the birth of Maistora, the first ever in Bulgaria gallery especially built for one artist opened gates in Kyustendil – the current Art Gallery “Vladimir Dimtrov- Maistora”. Today, the gallery houses around 300 paintings and over 1000 drawings by the artist, as well as exhibitions of works of other Bulgarian artists. The Gallery is one of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist places.
