Kozhuh Volcanic Hill

The volcanic hill Kozhuh is located in the famous region of Rupite, in the southeast part of Bulgaria. The whole region is a crater of an extinct volcano. The unique nature here has attracted people since ancient times. The hill itself was a cultural and religious center of the region. Traces of a thousand-year-old human presence have been discovered. Ceramic fragments since the eolith era are the earliest findings. They prove that people inhabiting these lands lived in harmony with nature, traditional cults to the Sun and admiration for the earth and heavenly powers. In the end of the bronze era, the Thracians conquered the region. During their boom (4 century B.C.), a big and bustling town was formed on Kozhuh. In the Middle Ages, the monastery St. Pantaleymon was built nearby. Nowadays, there is a small chapel in its place.
The archeological remains from Kozhuh and the adjacent lands are under the protection of the law.
