Natural Park Rusenski Lom

Natural Park Rusenski Lom covers the valleys of the rivers Rusenski, Beli and Cherni Lom and their affluents in the Smesite district, where the rivers Beli and Cherni Lom merge and form the onset of Rusenski Lom. The Park was established in 1970 in order to preserve the unique nature of the picturesque canyon-like valleys of the Loms combined with the cultural-historical complex Cherven – Ivanovo.  Except for its beautiful wild nature, the park is also notable for the numerous historical monuments found in it. During the middle ages, a group of monks-anchorets dug many churches, chapels and monasteries into the rocks, the most impressive ones being the seven Rock-hewn churches and the Rock monastery near the village of Ivanovo, which has been included in UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. Natural Park Rusenski Lom is distinguished for its varied flora and fauna. 17 endangered bird species, some of them included in the Bulgarian Red Book, live around this place. The Egypt vulture has its northernmost dwelling here.
