Seven Rila Lakes

The Seven Rila Lakes are one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria. They are located in the northwestern part of the Rila mountain and are arranged in a step-like pattern in a natural circus amphitheater. Officially, the lakes are numbered from up to down, as follows: Salzata (The Tear), Okoto (The Eye), Babreka (The Kidney), Bliznaka (The Twin), Trilistnika (The Trefoil), Ribnoto (The Fish), and Sedmoto (The Seventh lake). When the weather is sunny and quiet, the lakes are calm and clear, but when there is a storm, they become dark, fearful, and foaming. In winter, they freeze and become covered with thick snow. Bliznaka (The Twin) is the largest lake by area.
