The Wonder Bridges near the village of Zabardo

The so-called “Wonder Bridges” are one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Bulgaria’s Rodopi mountain. They are situated some 5 km northwest of the village of Zabardo. People also call them “Erkyupria” (from “er” – land, and “kypria” – bridge in Turkish). According to specialists, the bridges were once a cave, which had most probably collapsed as a result of an earthquake. The waters of the Dalbok Dol river had carried away the fallen rock materials, and thus, the two incredibly beautiful marble bridges have formed up. The vault arch of the first one is around 20 km thick, and the abyss underneath it reaches 45 m in depth. It is around 45 m wide. The second bridge, located some 200 m away from the first one, greatly resembles a 60-m long tunnel. The entrance of the Icy cave is very close to it. This cave is famous for the fact, that ice is preserved in it until very late in the summer. The rocky cliffs of the bridges are strewn with rich greenery of wild geranium and habrlea rodopenzis.
