Museum of Wine, Pleven

The only wine museum on the Balkan Peninsula is located in the town of Pleven. It is situated in the Kaylaka park against the dam Totlebenov val. The Wine Museum was established in 2008 and is hosted in one of the caves of the park Kaylaka. Pleven has a long tradition in winemaking and is considered one of the main centers of the wine industry in Bulgaria. Here, in 1890 the country's first professional school of Viticulture and Wine was opened, and in 1902 - the National Institute for wine. The architecture of the museum is really impressive. The cave is artificially shaped like a cross and years ago there was an idea that the Plevenska Epopeya Panorama could be hosted in this place. However, because of the high humidity in the cave it proved to be unsuitable for preservation of historical artifacts. The museum has four separate rooms with different purposes, furnished with authentic wooden furniture. Here visitors can learn interesting facts about the history of wine production in Bulgaria. In the specially designed historical part a lot of pictures and objects related to the history of production, technology and specifics of varieties by region, are exhibited. The collection of wines includes specimens aged between 30 and 90 years. Part of the collection includes 6,000 bottles of modern wines from all brands and regions of the country (Photo: http://bulgariatravel.org)
