Dimum was a front door of the region for trading purposes (I-IV century BC). One of the earliest military castles, an important military post from the Roman period (9-14 years AD), including the base of the Danube fleet. Even during the first Roman emperor Augustus the castle was the most northeastern point and the boundary of the Roman province Mizia and Thracian kingdom. At the beginning II until the end of III century this place was camp for the stationary equestrian military part of the Roman army. Between 325 and 337 the Dimum is one of the largest urban centers along the Danube and the latest, most northern customs point of the Diocese of Illyricum. A large Thracian center residence of the Thracian ruler (I thousand BC) was developed nearby. Alexander the Great in his campaign to Thrace got so far, as well. The Roman castle Dimum was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 1965 (Photo: belene.bg)
